Why Sleep Matters

Sleep isn’t just rest — it’s your body’s time to repair, recharge, and restore. Without quality sleep, your brain, heart, immune system, and mood all take a hit. If you snore, wake up tired, or struggle to stay awake during the day, you might be living with undiagnosed sleep apnea — and you're not alone.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common but serious sleep disorder where a person's breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. These interruptions can happen hundreds of times a night, often without the person even knowing, and they prevent the body from getting the deep, restful sleep it needs.

There are three main types of sleep apnea:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): The most common type, caused by a blockage of the airway—usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep.

  • Central Sleep Apnea (CSA): This occurs when the brain doesn't send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.

  • Complex Sleep Apnea Syndrome: A combination of both obstructive and central sleep apnea.

  • Men with moderate to severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) are nearly three times more likely to suffer a stroke. OSA is also commonly diagnosed in individuals after a stroke.

  • Over half (58%) of people with OSA experience mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, loss of motivation, poor judgment, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating.

  • Up to 87% of untreated OSA patients are at risk for impaired memory, reduced alertness, and slower reaction times, affecting daily performance and safety.

Snoring is more than a nuisance—it can signal a serious health issue. In fact, up to 80% of people with untreated Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) experience morning headaches, often due to overnight oxygen deprivation.

  • Sleep Apnea is a major contributor to high blood pressure—77% of people with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) also experience hypertension.

  • Individuals with untreated OSA are four times more likely to develop atrial fibrillation, a dangerous irregular heartbeat that can lead to stroke or heart failure.

  • Up to 76% of people with OSA also suffer from congestive heart failure, placing additional strain on the heart.

  • OSA increases the risk of heart attack or premature death by 30%. Alarmingly, more than half of sudden deaths related to OSA occur between 10 PM and 6 AM, during typical sleep hours.

  • 58% of people with Type 2 Diabetes also have Sleep Apnea. Poor sleep quality interferes with insulin regulation, making blood sugar levels harder to control.

  • 61% of individuals with OSA struggle with obesity, largely due to hormonal imbalances. OSA increases ghrelin (the hunger hormone) and decreases leptin (the satiety hormone), leading to increased appetite and reduced feelings of fullness.

  • Up to 60% of OSA sufferers experience acid reflux (GERD). Breathing disruptions during sleep can trigger reflux episodes, creating a cycle of poor sleep and physical discomfort.

  • Up to 80% of middle-aged men with sleep apnea experience sexual dysfunction, often linked to reduced oxygen levels and disrupted hormone production during sleep.

  • 48% of people with OSA report nocturia—frequent nighttime urination—which can further disrupt sleep and contribute to daytime fatigue.
