A frenectomy is a quick and simple procedure used to fix a tongue-tie or lip-tie. These ties are small pieces of tissue that connect the tongue, lips, or cheeks to the mouth. If they are too tight or in the wrong place, they can cause problems like trouble speaking, limited movement, or dental issues. A frenectomy removes or loosens this tight tissue to improve how the mouth moves and feels.
A labial frenectomy involves removing or releasing the band of tissue that connects the lips to the gums. This procedure may be recommended to address concerns such as gum recession, spacing between the front teeth, or difficulties with dentures or orthodontic appliances.
If you or your child are showing any of these symptoms, it’s important to see a dentist or oral surgeon for a full evaluation and tailored treatment plan.
Before the frenectomy, Dr. Cody will thoroughly assess your or your child's oral health and review the treatment plan with you, including the recommended type of frenectomy and any pre- or post-procedure instructions. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia to ensure your comfort.
During the frenectomy, Dr. Cody will carefully remove or release the tongue-tie or lip-tie using precise techniques with the Solea laser. The procedure is generally quick and straightforward, causing minimal discomfort and allowing for a fast recovery with little downtime.
By correcting the functional limitations caused by a tight or restrictive tongue-tie or lip-tie, a frenectomy can enhance oral health and contribute to an improved quality of life.
Most insurance plans provide some coverage for a frenectomy. Our office will handle the claim submission on behalf of the patient.
We have found that most patients achieve the best results when a frenectomy is combined with myofunctional therapy, and in some cases, the use of adjunctive devices to optimize outcomes.
Following a frenectomy, mild discomfort, swelling, or minor bleeding at the treatment site may occur. We will provide comprehensive post-operative care instructions, including guidance on gentle oral hygiene and any necessary dietary modifications. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within a few days and often notice significant improvement in their symptoms soon thereafter.
Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor healing and ensure proper recovery of the tongue-tie or lip-tie. Dr. Cody, in collaboration with Michelle Wheeler (Myofunctional Therapist), will also provide guidance on exercises or stretches to maintain optimal mobility and prevent reattachment.
